Col Smee Under 20 Teams

Congratulations to the following players who have been selected in our Under 20 Teams to compete at State Championship from the 16th - 18th November. The boys will be looking to defend their title and will be playing at Ashfield while the girls will be playing at Parramatta.

If you get the chance to go out and have a look it is worth the effort as there will be plenty of great water polo played. Hopefully we can bring home both titles this year.

Academy Update

It has been a busy month.  We are now underway for the 2012-13 summer competition and our first social event of the year has been held. Thank you to the coaches and managers who have been able to get each of our teams in the pool with a minimum of fuss.

U16 Nationals

Congratulations to our 16A Girls Blue team who came away with the Bronze medal from the Brisbane U16 National Championships held in Brisbane during the October school holidays. Well done to Lena Mihailovic who was the leading goal scorer for the tournament with 42 goals in 10 games.

Other results were our 16A boys who finshed 9th, our 16B girls who finshed 20th and our 16B boys who finished 23rd.

Following the tournament Australian Water Polo announced a Boys born '96 target squad in the lead up to the 2014 World Youth Championships. We were fortunate to have 3 players named, Tom Freeman, Rhys Holden and Angus Lambie. Congratulations boys, plenty of work still to be done.

Australian Born '94 Team

Congratulations to Maddie Schmid, Blake Buckley and Sam Cocokios on their selection in the Australian Born '94 teams for the upcoming FINA World Youth Championships to be held in Perth in December. It is a fantastic honour to represent your country so well done to all three.

Blue Tie Ball

Cronulla Water Polo held their first social event of the year last Saturday night with a crowd of over 130 in attendance. During the evening we heard from our Olympic Bronze Medal winning ladies, Holly Lincoln-Smith and Alicia McCormack along with their coach Greg McFadden.

Following the formalities there was some superb dance moves as the crowd enjoyed the music of local band Chunk.

Thank you to the small but very enthusiastic group of Academy parents who attended. Hopefully word will spread on what a great evening it was.

A huge thanks to Lisa Schweighoffer and her band of merry helpers, Anne Ryan, Sonia Liska, Anne Turner & Dick Davies who made the night such an enjoyable occasion.

Our next club function will be the Trivia night to be held in the early part of 2013. Our aim is to get a table from each Academy team to attend, a good challenge for our managers.

See you around the pool

Blue Tie Ball Success

Last Saturday was the Sharks Blue Tie Ball. It was a huge success as a form of getting club members together and also raising some funds for the club. Our favourite MC, Jon Harker (accompanied by his beautiful daughter) opened the night with some Olympic yarns and interviews with Macca, Holly and Dumper.
Harks interviewing our Olympic Bronze Medalist
 The interviews were followed by a two course meal and plenty of light refreshments. The silent auctions were hotly contested with many donated prizes raising money for the club. Some prizes included the Sharks new Umbrella's (now available) through to some great holiday destinations along the coast. The two main auction items, Autographed Swans Jersey and the Helicopter Flight Lessons raised over $3000. The Band, Chunk then fired up and everyone cut loose.
Karl discovers he wants to be a rock star.
Congratulations to Lisa Schweighoffer and her team on organizing a fantastic event. Thanks also to everyone who donated a prize or auction item.Thanks also to everyone who bought an auction item, raffle ticket or just came and supported the evening. You all helped raise more than $10,000 for the Club. Extra mention must finally go to the dynamic Chunk who really got the floor rocking. See you all next year.

Canberra Cup, 15-16 September 2012
Over the past weekend, a 17 & Under boys side from Cronulla competed in the 2012 Canberra Cup. Coached by Predrag Mihailovic – the boys had a fantastic weekend, remaining undefeated to win the final 19-9 against Sydney Uni to take the 2012 Canberra Cup 17 & Under Boys division and the $1,000 1st prize. Nic Brooks was awarded the MVP for the tournament.

The tournament, in its sixth year, has a great format (one of the first for the up-coming season). It was hosted at the AIS, and included a complimentary BBQ on the Saturday night. Teams were entered from Sydney Uni, Hunter Academy, Drummoyne, Nordek (Canberra Academy), Ovens & Murray. Cronulla will look to defend its title next year, and perhaps look at the Opens division for our Senior teams.
Team: Sam Cocokios, Uga Mihailovic, Wade Turner, Angus Lambie, Dylan Holden, Nic Brooks, Rhys Holden, Zac Quinn, Keiren Brunner-Evans, Mat Schweighoffer, Tom Freeman, Lachlan Greer, and Keeland Milankovic (late inclusion).

European Training Camp – June 2013
It is on again! The 2013 European Training camp.

In Jan 2012, Cronulla sent 15 players to Europe for a training camp in Serbia and Montenegro. That camp was very successful, and every one of the players who went (and the manager) called it the experience of a lifetime. Predrag Mihailovic (Cronulla Head Coach) has decided it is time to duplicate that experience.
 He has proposed a training camp in June 2013 for men’s and women’s teams, targeted for the Uni and School break. This is a great opportunity for a unique training camp, at world class facilities in Montengro and Turkey with world class coaching.
At the early stage, the high level plans for this tour are:
·         Departing around 26th June, returning on or around 11th July;
·         6-7 days in Budva, Montenegro (on the Adriatic Coast), training in the pool and sparring with the local teams;
·         8-9 days in Istanbul, Turkey (Galatasaray) at their new training facility. This will include sparring with Galatasaray and other local men’s and women’s squads
 The cost of the camp is currently estimated at $5,000 per player, which includes:
Ø  air fares
Ø  accommodation (close to training facilities)
Ø  meals in hotel or restaurants (no fast food)
Ø  land transport and transfers
Ø  pool entry.
The general plan is for two by two-hour pool sessions per day, including sparring and possible gym set;
It is also hoped to organise some opportunities for some scenic tours, including a one-day boat tour of Dubrovnik, Istanbul historical sites. Also included is a team outfit for the tour.
The opportunity is open to all players from U18 to Opens.
The coaching staff, depending on number or players, will be Predrag Mihailovic, Dusan Krstic, Alicia McCormack and Bec Rippon.
The manager for the tour is proposed to be Jasna Mihailovic. Jasna brings extensive local knowledge of the locations on the tour, and is fluent in the languages.
This is a unique opportunity. So what is the next step?
At this stage we want to gauge the interest in attending this camp. There is a lot of planning required to make this trip successful – so we need to have an indication of interest before 25th September.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself or Predrag. If you want to see how the last trip went, ask some of the players we that made the trip in Jan 2012, or visit for the managers trip report (http://www.cronullawaterpolo.com.au/2012/01/mens-european-training-camp-2012.html).
