Canberra
Cup, 15-16 September 2012
Over the
past weekend, a 17 & Under boys side from Cronulla competed in the 2012
Canberra Cup. Coached by Predrag Mihailovic – the boys had a fantastic weekend,
remaining undefeated to win the final 19-9 against Sydney Uni to take the 2012
Canberra Cup 17 & Under Boys division and the $1,000 1st prize. Nic Brooks
was awarded the MVP for the tournament.
The
tournament, in its sixth year, has a great format (one of the first for the
up-coming season). It was hosted at the AIS, and included a complimentary BBQ
on the Saturday night. Teams were entered from Sydney Uni, Hunter Academy,
Drummoyne, Nordek (Canberra Academy), Ovens & Murray. Cronulla will look to
defend its title next year, and perhaps look at the Opens division for our
Senior teams.
Team: Sam
Cocokios, Uga Mihailovic, Wade Turner, Angus Lambie, Dylan Holden, Nic Brooks,
Rhys Holden, Zac Quinn, Keiren Brunner-Evans, Mat Schweighoffer, Tom Freeman,
Lachlan Greer, and Keeland Milankovic (late inclusion).
European Training Camp – June 2013
In Jan 2012, Cronulla sent 15
players to Europe for a training camp in Serbia and Montenegro. That camp was
very successful, and every one of the players who went (and the manager) called
it the experience of a lifetime. Predrag Mihailovic (Cronulla Head Coach) has
decided it is time to duplicate that experience.
He has proposed a training camp
in June 2013 for men’s and women’s teams, targeted for the Uni and School break.
This is a great opportunity for a unique training camp, at world class
facilities in Montengro and Turkey with world class coaching.
At the early stage, the high
level plans for this tour are:
·
Departing around 26th June, returning
on or around 11th July;
·
6-7 days in Budva, Montenegro (on the Adriatic
Coast), training in the pool and sparring with the local teams;
·
8-9 days in Istanbul, Turkey (Galatasaray) at
their new training facility. This will include sparring with Galatasaray and
other local men’s and women’s squads
The cost of the camp is
currently estimated at $5,000 per player, which includes:
Ø
air fares
Ø
accommodation (close to training facilities)
Ø
meals in hotel or restaurants (no fast food)
Ø
land transport and transfers
Ø
pool entry.
The general plan is for two by
two-hour pool sessions per day, including sparring and possible gym set;
It is also hoped to organise some
opportunities for some scenic tours, including a one-day boat tour of Dubrovnik,
Istanbul historical sites. Also included is a team outfit for the tour.
The opportunity is open to all
players from U18 to Opens.
The coaching staff, depending on
number or players, will be Predrag Mihailovic, Dusan Krstic, Alicia McCormack
and Bec Rippon.
The manager for the tour is
proposed to be Jasna Mihailovic. Jasna brings extensive local knowledge of the
locations on the tour, and is fluent in the languages.
This is a unique
opportunity. So what is the next step?
At this stage we want to gauge
the interest in attending this camp. There is a lot of planning required to
make this trip successful – so we need to have an indication of interest before
25th September.
If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact myself or Predrag. If you want to see how the last trip
went, ask some of the players we that made the trip in Jan 2012, or visit for
the managers trip report (http://www.cronullawaterpolo.com.au/2012/01/mens-european-training-camp-2012.html).
