Important message from the club president
FROM THE PRESIDENT
As you are all no doubt aware we are due to celebrate our 50th
year at Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club. This is a milestone event and one of which we
should all be very proud. All players,
coaches, managers and officials over the past 50 years have helped to create
the Club that we are today.
I would like to ask you all to support our upcoming 50th
Anniversary Golden Ball by organising your tables as soon as possible. A lot of work has gone into organising what
should be a fantastic night reminiscing and reliving the highlights, past and
present.
Due to the enormous efforts it takes to bring together
social events of this size, it will be our last ball for a couple of years, so
please put your support behind this one and enjoy your Club’s very proud and successful history.
In addition to the Ball we are holding a Raffle with some
great prizes. The Raffle will be drawn
at the Ball on October 11th. Raffle
books will be handed out next week to all Academy players including U14, U16
and U18 players. Each player need only
sell 10 x $5.00 tickets. Funds raised
will be going towards our ‘wishlist’. I
ask that the players in these teams sell these tickets themselves as your
parents have worked hard to pay your fees and expenses each season so that you
can enjoy the benefits of our sport.
I hope to see many of you at The Ball where we can celebrate
together.
JOHN ZAGAME.
Urgent Notice regarding FINA Rules
Water Polo Australia has just released a statement withdrawing the use of the
new FINA rules in their entirety at the U16 National Championships in both
Hobart and Melbourne. Therefore the 'old' FINA rules will be in place for the
U16 National Championships.
Any questions, feel free to ask! akaesler95@gmail.com

Level 0 referee training from NSW Water Polo
A Message from Ash:
You may or may not have seen the Level 0 course that New South Wales Water Polo is advertising at the moment. The course is open to not only referees who wish to gain New South Wales accreditation - which is a requirement for refereeing this 2013/14 Summer season, but also for parents and coaches who wish to familiarise themselves with the new rules and interpretations, and enhance their knowledge of our great game!
I strongly encourage that you attend if you can, as there will be current and ex FINA grade referees presenting the material, which presents an invaluable opportunity to ask detailed questions and receive accurate answers.

Pool space update
Hi all,
Given the recent disruption to some of the proposed training we felt it an appropriate time to give you an update on the availability of pool space.
For those that are not aware, we operate on a subsidy arrangement with the council where we are allocated pool space each week without the requirement of paying the pool hire fee. For any other times we wish to use, there is a charge of around $65 per hour per half of the pool.
We are continually working with the Council to try and broaden our subsidy. John Zagame and Tony Quinn met with the Director - Community and Recreation Services regarding some additional time for Winter. The outcome from this meeting is that John and Tony will be locking in a time with the Mayor in the near future to discuss our arrangements.
The frustration levels are as high within the club committee as they are in our parents and kids who wish to train, particularly when we see the pool sitting idle through the week.
Following the recent meeting, we have formally written to the council to ask for Tuesday nights and a couple of mornings a week for training. We are yet to hear back but it has been followed up.
We will keep you updated as we (hopefully) make progress.

50th anniversary Golden Ball dates announced!
A Date For The Diary:
Friday 11th October, 2013
Blue Tie Ball
50th Anniversary of Cronulla Water Polo
18's Boys win silver
Cronulla U18's Boys win Silver at nationals
The
Cronulla U18 Men’s team have won silver in the National Championships recently
held at the Institute of Sport in Canberra. The silver medal caps off a Stella
year for the team who won the Metropolitan and State Championships on the way
to the Nationals Gold Medal game against the old enemy Sydney University.
After
drawing tournament favourites Melville Saints in their pool and clawing back to
an outstanding
8 – 8 draw
in the first round against them Cronulla were placed 2nd in the pool
on goal averages.
In the
tournament crossover Cronulla crushed Queensland heavyweights KFC Breakers 13 –
2 to set up the most entertaining game of the tournament against Melville
Sharks. In that quarter final two goals to Cronulla in final 47 seconds
allowed them to take the lead, however a last gasp goal allowed Melville to
level the score at 8-all to take the game into golden goal extra-time. For
seven minutes, both teams exchanged shots with neither team able to break the
deadlock, before Kieren Brunner-Evans scored his second to seal Cronulla’s
place in the semi-finals.
With their
veins still pulsating with adrenaline from this victory Cronulla destroyed
Hunter Blue 15 – 5 in the semi-final to set up the gold medal match against
Sydney University.
In a low
scoring game that was described by Australian Water Polo as “an epic” Cronulla
lost out 4 – 3 after leading 3 – 2 at the main break. In the end it was a
masterful display by Sydney University and Australian representative goalkeeper
Anthony Hrysanthos that denied Cronulla the water polo grand slam of Metropolitan,
State and National Championships in 2013.
Cronulla
Team Coach Dudi Krstic said, “We could have won, we
just missed our chance,”.
Whilst the loss was disappointing for the team it was not
all bad news with 3 Cronulla players being recognised for their outstanding
form at the championships being selected to represent Australia in Europe later
in the year. After an outstanding National League season Goal Keeper Sam
Cocokios will represent Australia in The junior men’s team on their world
championship tour to Croatia and Hungary.
Tom Freeman and Angus Lambie will also represent
Australia in the Born 1996 team to tour Germany, Hungary and Croatia.
Australian Born 96 coach Andrew Yanitsas said, “The team was selected in
regards to their performances in the championships and the camps, along with
their potential for higher representation. These boys selected have a great
opportunity to cement their spots in the team, going forward into next year’s
world championships.”

In addtion to the A Graders our 14B Boys will enter their Grand Final undefeated with a staggering 304 goals for and 46 against. Here's hoping they can finish off their fantastic year. Well done to Katrina Mulcahy who has looked after them through the Summer.
We very nearly had 10 Grand Finalists, with three of our Academy sides (G14B, G16B & B16B) and our L4 all going out in close games in their Grand Final Qualifiers over the last few days.
If you get the chance to support 1 or more of the sides over the weekend, that would fantastic, particularly in our blue shirts.

Academy Update
Academy Update
A lot has happened since our update in late January. We have 2 State Champions and all 10 Academy sides are in the Metro finals, what a fantastic acheivement for the club.
Metro
Finals have already begun with our Under 18 Girls already qualified for the Grand Final and our 14B girls just getting beaten yesterday, although they get another chance next week.
We have most of our sides playing finals this week with the exception being our 16B boys and our 14A girls who still have a round to play. We look forward to many great results over the next couple of weeks.
Please keep an eye on the website as we try to keep everyone up to date with how we are progressing.
State Championships
Under 14
The under 14 State Championships were held in February up at the Central Coast. All 4 of our sides represented Cronulla with great distinction.
Also congratulations to our 14A girls who also made the final but fell to a very strong Drummoyne side. We know Brew Falson (coach) is looking forward to meeting up with them again during the Metro comp and at the upcoming National Championships in April.
Our two B sides also performed admirably over the weekend with the girls just missing out on a quarter final birth (going down 4-3 in the qualifier) and our boys defeating the strong Hunter side during their round games.
Following the carnival Under 14 State Squads were announced along with Under 13 Development Squads. Cronulla are well represented in each of the Squads with the State teams to be chosen in late April.
Under 14 State Champions
Keellan Milinkovic, Jake Hatcher, Blair Ryan, Jet Turner, Boyd Spencer, Declan Spencer, Bevan Pulling, Kyle Hollands, Leighton Sii, Nick Manchester, Matthias Jancic. Coach: Kerry Turner, Manager: Anne Ryan
Under 14 State Squads

Under 18
We have just completed the Under 18 State Championships and are pleased to announce our Under 18 boys are State Champions for the second year in a row. This is predominanty the same group of boys who 4 years ago, on the Central Coast, were the Under 14 State Champions. These boys are Nic Brooks, Sam Cocokios, Dylan Holden, Zac Quinn, Matt Schweighoffer, Lachlan Greer, Angus Lambie & Rhys Holden.
Under 18 State Champions
Nic Brooks, Sam Cocokios, Dylan Holden, Zac Quinn, Matt Schweighoffer, Lachlan Greer, Angus Lambie, Rhys Holden, Uga Mihailovic, Conor Davis, Tom Freeman, Wade Turner, Lachlan Clarke,Jack Robertson & Keiran Brunner-Evans. Coach: Dusan (Dudi) Krstic, Manager: Ray (Roy) Lambie
We entered two girls sides in this year’s State Championships. Our A side were beaten 6-4 in the Semi Final after going through the round games undefeated, including a draw against the eventual winners Hunter. Our B side, comprising a large number of younger girls, finished a very creditable 6th.
I know Bec is excited by what the club has to offer in the depth of our girl’s squads and is looking forward to the Nationals in April.
Club News
We will be holding the annual Sportsmans Lunch in the coming weeks. Final details are being worked on now with an invite to be sent to all members in the next week. It is a great afternoon of fun and we hope to see as many of our supporters there as possible.
Our National League teams are half way through their season with some mixed results to date. Our girls are just starting to hit their straps with two victories over the weekend to put them back in the hunt for a finals birth. They will need to win the majority of their remaining games to make the finals.
Our mens side continues to develop under head coach Predrag and after coming close to taking a large scalp in recent weeks managed to take one over the weekend when they defeated last years minor premiers UNSW Wests. This in addition to their recent victories over Adelaide has them in a great frame of mind for the remaining 10 games.
Below is an outline of the remaining National League home games. If you get the chance to get along to the games, please wear your Cronulla shirt and cheer them on.
Thursday 14th March vs Brisbane Barracudas – Women at 6.15pm, Men at 7.30pm
